A thankless task
Allenby Chilton was handed the job of managing a Pools side that had finished in the bottom two of the Football League in each of the last three seasons. Chilton, a former player for Manchester United and player-manager at Grimsby Town, was given a rolling contract. He was in charge for 35 games, but fortunes on the pitch remained at an all-time low.
