Centre-back Mick Smith was one of the mainstays of the Wimbledon side that stormed up the Football League in the 1980s. Injury ended his time in the Crazy Gang just as they reached the top flight and, after a spell in non-league football, Bobby Moncur brought Smith to a rock-bottom Pools in 1989. Moncur lost his job soon afterwards but Smith played an important role as Pools climbed out of relegation trouble under Cyril Knowles.
