Geordie striker Joe Allon joined Pools from Swansea City in 1988. After a slow start he top-scored with 17 goals in 1989/90 and followed that with a club record 35 as the club won promotion in 1990/91. Allon left for Chelsea in the summer of 1991 but failed to win a regular place at Stamford Bridge. After a series of moves he rejoined Pools in 1995 and finished top scorer twice more before retiring through injury.
