Godwin Antwi

In the summer of 2007 Danny Wilson found himself short of defensive cover having released Mark Tinkler, Darren Williams and Carl Jones. Ghanaian centre-half Godwin Antwi had impressed against Pools while playing for Accrington Stanley on loan from Liverpool. Wilson acted quickly to secure the services of the teenager on a season-long loan, the first time Hartlepool United had ever taken advantage of this type of loan arrangement. After some promising displays in pre-season Antwi began the campaign in preference to the popular Ben Clark.

He started well, with some dominant displays in defence, and he scored his first goal for the club in a home win against Doncaster. As the season progressed, his inexperience began to show a little as the team struggled badly on the road. Clark returned to the side in October but was injured a month later, giving Antwi another chance. With Pools now lingering in the bottom half of the table, Antwi found he could not quite reproduce his early season confidence. He lost his place again when Clark returned in March and spent the end of the season on the bench. He returned to Liverpool in May 2008.
