As a bustling wide midfielder, Neil Warnock performed well enough in a struggling Pools side to win Player of the Year in 1971/72. He left during the following season to continue his useful lower division career with Scunthorpe but it was as a manager that Warnock forged his lasting reputation. He won promotion with Scarborough, Notts County (twice), Huddersfield and Plymouth before leading his boyhood idols Sheffield United into the Premiership in 2006.
