Match Report

With his side having struggled for goals in recent weeks, manager Fred Westgarth was happy to welcome the fit-again Tommy McGuigan back into his side for the visit of struggling Crewe. McGuigan replaced Fred Richardson who had failed to score in his previous ten games.

Pools began the game in confident mood with the deep-lying McGuigan supplying the passes for the probing runs of Bobby Lumley and Joe Rayment, while top scorer George Luke was at his elusive best. Kenny Johnson was desperately unlucky not to open the scoring when he flung himself at a low McGuigan cross only to see centre half Alf Lees scramble the ball off the line with his keeper beaten. With all of the pressure coming from Pools, the Victoria Ground crowd were stunned on the half-hour mark when the opening goal came at the other end. Winger Jimmy Rolfe cut in from the left and beat an isolated Watty Moore, before slotting the ball past Jim Dyson.

Falling behind seemed to give Pools the impetus they needed to turn their possession into goals, and within 12 minutes they were 3-1 up. On 36 minutes Johnson rose well to meet a Ray Thompson free kick and guide a header past Peter Ellson. Three minutes later Ellson rescued his side with a great save to deny Luke, but it was a temporary reprieve as Luke headed in from the resulting corner. Pools were now full of confidence and the crowd did not have to wait long for the next goal, with Luke and Rayment combining brilliantly to set up Johnson for a tap-in.

The second half began as the first had ended, with Pools swarming all over the overworked Crewe back line. On 48 minutes Johnson completed his hat trick with another header, this time from a Luke cross. Ten minutes later Johnson missed probably his easiest chance of the match when another Luke chip gave him a free header that he glanced over the top. Midway through the half, after further chances for McGuigan and Luke, Johnson was on target again when he picked up the ball after good work from Rayment and drove home from 15 yards. Five minutes later the scoring was complete. Rayment picked out Johnson on the edge of the area. With four goals already to his name, the striker passed to Bobby Lumley, who spun away from his marker and slammed the ball past Ellson.
