Match Report

With Pools due to play Hull City in the League just four days later, both Neale Cooper and Peter Taylor fielded very understrength teams for this LDV Vans trophy match. The match failed to interest the general public with less than 1500 Pools supporters attending the game and only 72 making the trip from Hull. Those that did attend saw a decent game of football with six goals, a red card, a penalty shootout, and even a one woman pitch invasion!

The visiting side took an early lead. Attacking the Town End, Jason Price beat Matty Robson on the right wing and hit a low cross. The cross was cleared by Alan Pouton but his clearance fell kindly for PRICE who drove the ball past Dimi Konstantopoulos, making a rare start in the Hartlepool goal. Pools enjoyed the better of the rest of the half but Eifion Williams and Pouton were off target with the best chances.

After a half-time break which provided the bizarre sight of a political protester dressed as Catwoman handcuffing herself to the Town End goal, the game restarted and Hull wasted little time in doubling their lead. Stuart GREEN picked up a loose ball and slammed it into the bottom corner. Pools hit back strongly and were back in the game four minutes later. Williams broke clear of the Tigers defence and was felled by keeper Boaz Myhill as he took the ball around him. Myhill was dismissed and the first thing that substitute keeper Matt Duke had to do was face a penalty, which Gavin STRACHAN duly dispatched. Pools were now on top and were soon on level terms. Joel Porter took the ball to the byeline and pulled it back for POUTON to drive home. With 20 minutes remaining both managers strengthened their sides with Adam Boyd and Stuart Elliott being introduced to the action. Neither could inspire their side to a winner, and the game went into extra time.

The extra half-hour was an entertaining affair with both sides creating and wasting chances before Hull took the lead once more. A Pools attack broke down and the visitors broke quickly with ELLIOTT slotting the ball past Konstantopoulos. With six minutes left Darren Craddock and Martin Woods combined to set up PORTER who scored from two yards to send the game to a penalty shootout. Konstantopoulos proved to be the hero of the shootout, saving from Elliott and Ashbee, leaving Adam Boyd with the task of winning the tie for Pools. The top scorer made no mistake, sending his spot kick high to the keeper`s right.
