John Bird's replacement was announced on this day in 1988 when Bobby Moncur was unveiled as the new manager of Hartlepool United. The former Newcastle captain had enjoyed previous managerial stints at Carlisle, Hearts and Plymouth, and looked to have inherited a promising squad, with Pools lying in eight place in the division.
