Young forward Charlie Wyke spent six months on loan from Middlesbrough during a difficult season for the club. Pools were short of goals and confidence, and were second bottom of League One when Wyke arrived. The strongly built youngster showed some glimpses of talent during his time with the club, which was eventually curtailed by injury problems that had hampered him towards the end of his stay. His equalising goal earned a point at Shrewsbury and he also scored in an impressive victory over Crewe. Wyke returned to the Vic for a second spell in August 2014. Pools had started the new season in goal-shy fashion, having failed to hit the target in the first three league games, and Wyke was borrowed with a view to boosting the attacking options. He looked a stronger player second time around, and he led the line well in what was a difficult time for the club on the pitch. He made 14 appearances in this second spell, scoring four times.
