As the club`s promotion push began to gather momentum in 1968, Pools manager Gus McLean brought in striker Bobby Cummings from Darlington. He made an instant impact with 9 goals in 18 starts, and helped to compensate for the loss of Ernie Phythian as the team made a storming finish to win promotion for the first time ever. Cummings found it harder going in Division Three and managed just three goals as the club was relegated. He later played in South Africa.
