Sam English`s career will always be remembered for his time in Glasgow. It was a period of his career that started with much promise but ended in tragedy. As a promising young striker at Glasgow Rangers he set a club record for most league goals in a season, a tally of 44 that stands to this day. But in an Old Firm match on September 5th 1931 he was involved in a distressing accident that would haunt him for the rest of his career. Chasing a 50-50 ball his knee collided with the head of John Thomson, the young Celtic goalkeeper. Thomson suffered a fractured skull and died from his injuries later the same day. Thomson`s family attached no blame to English but the incident had an adverse effect on the young player and he left Scotland and headed south to sign for Liverpool. After a successful spell on Merseyside English moved on again, and signed for Hartlepools in 1936. He scored 20 goals in his first season and reached double figures the following year. But he remained disillusioned with the game and retired permanently shortly afterwards.
