Centre half Bill Green was a regular in the Pools team in the early 70s, captaining the side at the age of 20. His performances attracted the attention of Carlisle United who signed him in 1973. He captained the Cumbrians in the first division and scored the club's first ever top flight goal. Green later played for West Ham, Peterborough and Chesterfield, and had a spell as manager of Scunthorpe.
