Alan Murray brought popular striker Lenny Johnrose to Pools in February 1992 as the club flirted with the third division playoffs. Johnrose was a first team regular for the next two years without ever finding the net on a regular basis and he had the misfortune to start each of the club`s record 13 consecutive goalless games in 1993. His most memorable strike was the only goal in a win at Division Two leaders Stoke City shortly after the end of that barren spell, a win that helped the club avoid relegation for another season. He left the club later that year but enjoyed a good career in a midfield role at Bury, Burnley and Swansea. In 2017, while still only in his late 40s, Johnrose was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease after a hand injury failed to heal. For the rest of his life he worked tirelessly to raise funds and awareness about the condition. He died in August 2022, aged just 52.
