Seaham born full back Hodgson had a brief trial at the Vic in 1931 but was never signed. He went on to play for Grimsby Town for whom he clocked up over 200 appearances, the most memorable of which was the 1939 FA Cup semi-final against Wolves at Old Trafford. Town goalkeeper George Moulson was injured in the first half and Hodgson was forced to don the gloves but could do little to prevent Wolves running out 5-0 winners. He later played for Doncaster.
