Chris Westwood arrived at the club in 1999 having been released by Wolverhampton Wanderers. Pools boss Chris Turner was aware of the centre half's abilities having worked at Molineux as youth team coach while Westwood was a young pro. After a slow start, Westie soon blossomed into a fine centre half either as part of a back three, or in a 4-4-2 formation where he formed formidable partnerships with Graeme Lee and then Micky Nelson. A quick player with good positional awareness and a solid tackle he bailed the team out of awkward positions on numerous occasions. For a player who made so few mistakes, he was unlucky that a couple of his errors were punished in high-profile games. His mistake in a playoff semi-final against Cheltenham cost his team a vital win and his dismissal in the playoff final in 2005 was a pivotal moment as Pools lost in extra time. It was a sad end to what turned out to be his last appearance in a Pools shirt. But Westwood experienced many more highs than lows in a Pools career that stretched to well over 250 games, and he will be remembered as one of the finest centre backs ever to grace Victoria Park.
