Following their formation in 1905, Spennymoor United were one of the stalwarts of the local non-league side for over 100 years. Disaster struck on Christmas Day 2003 when a fire destroyed the clubhouse. United never fully recovered from the financial blow and were forced to fold without completing their 2004/05 Northern Premier League season. Evenwood Town, another long-standing club who had hit hard times further down the pyramid, moved to Spennymoor's Brewery Field and changed their name to Spennymoor Town, with the majority of former United fans pledging their allegiance to the "new" Spennymoor.
