Match Report

A weakened Pools team got back on track after two home defeats in the previous week, with a deserved win at Vale Park. The visitors started the game without Mark Tinkler and Chris Westwood who were both injured in the midweek defeat to Luton Town. Micky Nelson and Anthony Sweeney also picked up knocks in that game but were passed fit to play.

The important goal came after just 70 seconds when Adam Boyd`s trickery created some space for himself in the left hand side of the box, and he squared for Joel PORTER to sidefoot home. Pools were on top for most of the first half, with Nelson hitting the post with a spectacular overhead effort, and Porter and Ritchie Humphreys also going close. The nearest the home side came to an equaliser was a free-kick from 20 yards, that Dimi Konstantopoulos held easily, and a volley from Pools old boy Tommy Widdrington that went wide.

Vale changed their formation for the second half, but despite posing more of a threat than they had before the break, they did little to threaten a Pools rearguard superbly marshalled by Nelson and Ben Clark. With Gavin Strachan enjoying an excellent game in the middle of the park, Pools were a regular threat themselves. The two sides both enjoyed spells of possession with neither team looking like scoring. Pools had a scare near the end when Konstantopoluos dropped a cross but defenders were there in numbers to snuff out any chance. An equaliser would have been harsh on Pools, who did enough in the game to earn their three points, and though Goodlad produced a fine save to prevent Boyd from adding a second, that early Porter strike ultimately proved to be the winner.
