Match Report

The last surviving unbeaten home record in the Football League was ended as Pools lost to former manager Mike Newell`s league leaders. Pools had been given a boost in the build up to the game when Luton`s main attacking threat (and regular Pools nemesis) Steve Howard was ruled out through suspension. Pools lined up with an unfamiliar 3-5-2 formation with Gavin Strachan returning to the midfield. New signing Jon Daly handed a start up front alongside Joel Porter, with top-scorer Adam Boyd playing a deeper role.

The opening exchanges were pretty even with both sides enjoying some possession, but Luton looked the more dangerous and it was the leaders who took the lead after 21 minutes. There seemed to be no danger when Chris COYNE picked up the ball on the halfway line. But the defender was allowed to run unchallenged to the edge of the area, form where he drove a shot into the bottom left corner. Pools had chances to equalise, with Anthony Sweeney, Porter and Strachan all going close, but Luton fully deserved their halftime lead.

Pools started the second half a little better but Luton`s defence looked solid and the home team struggled to get a clear sight of goal. Midway through the half Pools were dealt a blow when Luton doubled their lead in controversial circumstances. With Pools looking to substitute the injured Chris Westwood, Luton took a quick, long free kick to pick out Enoch SHOWUNMI running through the vacant centre half channel. The big striker tucked the ball past Konstantopoulos to provoke an angry reaction from Pools players and staff, that saw assistant manager Martin Scott sent to the stand. Within five minutes, however, Pools were back in the game. A cross from Ritchie Humphreys was flicked on to Sol DAVIS who could only head it past his own keeper. Pools`s hopes of preserving thei unbeaten home league record were short lived, as once again they were opened up through the middle of the park and Kevin FOLEY restored the two-goal cushion.

For the remaining 25 minutes Pools tried to get back into the game but Luton never looked in danger and continued to carry a potent attacking threat of their own. Indeed, they looked the more likely of the two teams to score. Pools were offered feint hope in stoppage time when their defence were guilty of being two casual and were dispossessed by Porter who released substitute Matty ROBSON to score. It was too little too late, as Luton ran out comfortable winners.
