Match Report

Pools missed out on the chance of a first-ever appearance in the FA Cup fifth round, and a money-spinning trip to Premiership Southampton when they lost at Victoria Park for the first time in ten months.

The game got off to a terrible start after just eight minutes when Jack Ross tripped Stephen Hunt in the area when the Brentford player was through on goal. The full back was sent off, leaving Pools to play nearly the whole game with ten men. The dismissal looked a harsh decision and was proved so when a three man panel rescinded Ross`s red card three days later! Dimitrios Konstantopoulos dived full length to his right to keep out Hunt`s spot-kick, but Pools were now on the back foot. Pools were dealt a further blow when Mark Tinkler went off injured after just half an hour. With a strong wind at their backs, Brentford dominated the opening 45 minutes, but the reshuffled defence, with Westwood at right back and Ben Clark at centre half, held out until half-time. The closest the Bees came to scoring was a dipping shot from Isaiah Rankin which hit the bar, while Joel Porter put Pools`s best chance just wide.

With the second half just three minutes old, Brentford broke the deadlock. A Talbot corner from the left found its way to RANKIN and the striker headed in unmarked to atone for his glaring miss in the first game at Griffin Park. For the remainder of the game the ten men of Pools battled manfully for an equaliser but for all of their pressure they failed to carve out many clear chances. Chris Westwood missed the best opportunity when he put a free header wide. At the other end, substitute Ben May came closest to adding to the lead, but he dragged his shot wide of the far post.

All in all, Brentford had the better of an untidy game. In windy conditions both teams played a direct style and there were few fluent moves. But Brentford used their man advantage well and, over the two games, thoroughly deserved to win the tie.

Notes

  • Jack Ross's straight red card was rescinded on appeal. It had been awarded for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity following a trip on Stephen Hunt.
