Match Report

Hartlepool`s season hit a new low as fellow strugglers Blackpool eased to a comfortable win at Victoria Park. The misery was compounded by reports of an incident in the dressing room after the game involving manager Martin Scott. The day had started brightly with news that star striker Adam Boyd was to be involved for the first time since limping off against Yeovil five months earlier. Boyd was named on the bench while Eifion Williams, whose dramatic late equaliser had earned the team a point at Swansea a week earlier, started in place of the injured Thomas Butler.

Blackpool started the game brightly but were rocked after just ten minutes when Neil Wood`s dreadful late challenge on Gavin Strachan earned him a straight red card. Pools took heart from their man advantage and passed the ball around well but failed to really trouble Seasiders keeper Lee Jones. Then, just before the half-hour mark Pools were also reduced to ten men. Keigan Parker, who had been causing the defence problems with his pace, got free again and was brought down by Micky Barron as he was about to shoot. Barron was dismissed, and the referee awarded a penalty. The penalty decision seemed dubious, and TV replays later showed that the challenge had taken place outside the area, but that did not deter Peter CLARKE who slotted home from 12 yards. Just a couple of minutes later the speedy Parker broke clear again but shot wildly when he should have increased the lead. With half-time approaching, Antony Sweeney had the ball in the net but his effort was correctly ruled out for offside.

The second half saw Boyd take to the field to a huge ovation from the home support but the early signs were that he was still some way short of match sharpness. Blackpool continued to press and almost doubled their lead when Rory Prendergast hit the post. Pools hit back and were given a lifeline when Boyd`s cross was handled by Tony Butler. Boyd took the resulting spot kick himself but Jones guessed correctly, saving the ball low to his right. It proved to be a crucial moment as Blackpool raced to the other end where Michael Nelson upended Parker, handing Blackpool another penalty of their own. CLARKE made no mistake.

From that point onwards Pools surrendered the fight. The excellent PARKER crowned his superb personal display by sprinting past Nelson with embarrassing ease and beating Dimi Konstantopoulos to score the goal his performance had richly deserved. Parker then left the field to applause from all sides of the ground. The reaction that greeted Martin Scott and the players at the end of the game was a lot less generous.

If we had stuck the penalty away it may have been a different story even though we didn't play particularly well. We've got to regroup and stick together through this.
