Match Report

Relegation worries continued to mount as an unchanged Pools side were denied a win in controversial circumstances against in-form Oldham Athletic at Victoria Park.

Looking to build on their recent improved home form, Pools started strongly and took the lead within 10 minutes. Joel Porter and Thomas Butler combined delightfully down the right, and the Irishman`s low cross was swept home by Lee BULLOCK. Pools continued to push forward and Latics keeper Lee Grant saved well to keep out a Matty Robson free-kick. Just after the half-hour mark Paul Stephenson had to make an enforced substitution when Porter picked up an injury. Adam Boyd took his place as Pools continued to look for a second goal to take into half-time. In first-half stoppage time controversy struck for the first time. An Oldham corner was cleared as far as Richie Wellans 25 yards out. The midfielder drove the ball back in through a crowd of players and it appeared to strike Bullock on the hip as he held his arms by his sides. To the disbelief of almost everyone in the ground, referee Kevin Friend decided that not only did the ball strike Bullock`s arm, but that the handball was deliberate. He awarded a penalty, which Luke BECKETT duly despatched, and an angry Pools team left the field at half-time with the scores level.

A fired-up Pools started the second half well and dominated the opening 15 minutes. Grant produced another wonderful save, this time to keep out Boyd`s snap-shot. Within a minute, Boyd picked up the ball on the right and tricked his way past two defenders before hitting a fierce shot past Grant and into the net. With fans and players celebrating, the referee noticed his assistant`s raised flag. After a brief consultation, the goal was disallowed. Replays would later show that, with Grant well beaten, Boyd`s shot took the faintest of touches off an offside Michael Proctor on the way in. It made no difference to the ball`s destination but, cruelly, it made a world of difference on the night.

Pools still looked the team more likely, but few clear cut chances were created. Boyd came the closest to nicking a deserved winner when his downward header was well saved. The final whistle brought cries of anger from the terraces as the home crowd made their feelings known to the officials. The point earned was scant consolation. With games fast running out Pools needed wins not draws, and this was a game where they will have felt they did enough.
