Match Report

Hartlepool United took a point from an entertaining Boxing Day encounter at league leaders Chesterfield. The Spireites, who had Pools record appearance holder Ritchie Humphreys enjoying a good match on the left, took the lead after a closely contested first half hour. Tendayi Darikwa was the man who broke the deadlock, driving a right footed volley past Scott Flinders. The lead lasted until three minutes into the second period, when Sam Hird upended James Poole as he closed in on goal. Matty Dolan took responsibility from twelve yards and fired home the equaliser. Pools had a case for feeling a little aggrieved that Hird remained on the pitch after conceding the penalty, and any feelings of injustice were increased when they were themselves reduced to ten men midway through the half. In fairness, Andy Monkhouse could have little complaints when he picked up a second yellow card for a foul soo after earning a first for diving. With a numerical disadvantage, Pools had some defending to do, but almost snatched a last minute winner when Luke James's superb drive was equally well saved by Tommy Lee.

I’d said to their midfielder “It is a good job none of us had Christmas dinner” because it was completely open in the first 20 minutes. It was a brilliant game to play in though.
- Matty Dolan
I was pleased with the point. We weren't at our best in any shape or form, we went ahead but it was disappointing to concede a poor goal straight after half time from what was just a straight long ball down the middle, which led to us conceding the penalty. You have to respect the opposition, they played very brightly and are a good young team.
- Paul Cook
