Match Report

An outstanding piece of play at either end of the pitch helped Pools to claim a point at an impressive Southend. 17-year-old midfield star Brad Walker scored an sublime equaliser just before the hour mark, while a sliding Darren Holden somehow managed to control and clear a late Kevan Hurst effort from the goalline to prevent the Shrimpers from snatching a winner. Earlier, a counter-attacking Pools had been competing well against a home side smarting from two consecutive defeats. Phil Brown's team's final playoff spot was looking a little vulnerable, not least from Pools, and they set about their job with a determination to reassert their promotion credentials. The Pools defence was tested to the limit at times, with Simon Walton, Christian Burgess and Sam Collins all clearing goalbound efforts, while Scott Flinders saved well from Anthony Straker, Adam Thompson and Ryan Leonard. When all else failed, the woodwork came to Pools' rescue, as Barry Corr sent a looping header onto the underside of the bar before it was gathered by Flinders. Corr did break the deadlock with a deft finish on 42 minutes, skilfully diverting Hurst's low cross into the far corner.

As impressive as the hosts were, it wasn't all one-way traffic. Home keeper Daniel Bentley saved well to deny both Walker and Luke James, and top-scorer James also looked to have a strong penalty claim when Thompson appeared to foul him in the area. Bentley could do nothing about the equaliser, as Walker added another memorable moment to his impressive debut season. He controlled a driven clearance on his chest and, as the ball dropped, hit a stunning volley into the top left corner from 25 yards. But this was a point built on a committed defence, typified by Holden's superb clearance to deny Hurst.

"Never Say Die" is the Hartlepool motto and all of the players showed that level of attitude. When I see players running out to block shots, and Darren Holden and others clearing balls off the line, it does make me smile. And then we see the technical ability of a 17-year-old midfield player who can do that.
- Colin Cooper
I’m disappointed but the perform-ance of the lads was there for all to see. Hartlepool came for blood and credit to them. But if we keep playing like this with the right attitude then things will start to change again for us.
- Phil Brown
