With Dunfermline fans expecting McCunnie to sign a contract extension, the player made a surprise move south of the border when Danny Wilson brought him to Pools the summer of 2007 following the club`s promotion to League One. McCunnie began the season at right back and produced some promising performances in the early weeks of the season. He lost his place when Wilson tried different combinations at the back to try to counter an alarming defensive record. When McCunnie did regain his place later in the season it was often in a defensive midfield role, though he did enjoy another run at full back as Pools won three in a row to climb away from the relegation battle.
The 2008/09 season saw even less opportunity for McCunnie despite the team struggling defensively. He was released in May 2009.
