Match Report

An unfamiliar Hartlepool United lineup started life in the Second Division with a thrilling victory in glorious sunshine at London Road. New manager Neale Cooper handed debuts to centre-backs Michael Nelson and Andy Jordan, midfielder Gavin Strachan, and centre forward Paul Robinson. Young winger Matty Robson was given a first league start after making his only other Pools appearance in an LDV Vans Cup tie at Tranmere a year earlier.

The game started badly for Pools, with Jordan judged to have fouled Peterborough`s Sagi Burton after quarter of an hour. Mark ARBER stepped up to beat Anthony Williams from the penalty spot. Just five minutes later and Pools were two down. Williams failed to deal with a routine high ball and presented Andy CLARKE with the easiest of finishes. For most of the first half Posh looked likely to extend their lead, much to the delight of the home supporters who taunted the near-1000 strong travelling support with cries of `You`ll Only Get 10 Points`. With eight minutes of the half remaining, STRACHAN gave the Posh crowd something to think about when he curled home a free kick to halve the decifit.

Five minutes after the break, Peterborough looked to have wrapped up a home victory when CLARKE pounced on a weak Chris Westwood clearance to score from the edge of the area. Pools refused to give up and scored again five minutes later. Eifion Williams squared the ball for ROBINSON to score from six yards. With both sets of players taking on water at regular intervals in an attempt to cope with the searing heat, Pools gradually started to get on top. With 20 minutes left on the clock ROBSON hit a dramatic equaliser, finishing well from a Ritchie Humphreys cross. Pools were now dominating the game against visibly tiring hosts, and won the game in stunning fashion with five minutes remaining. A corner was cleared to NELSON 35 yards out. The big defender charged forward a few yards before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top right hand corner, to send the Pools supporters wild.

A pulsating game ended with the visitors victorious by the odd goal in seven. With all four goals being scored by players making their league debuts for Pools, the travelling supporters had good cause to look forward to the rest of the season with optimism. Only ten points? Three down, seven to go!

Paul Robinson tried to get to it, and I heard afterwards that the lads on the bench, including the gaffer, wanted me to leave it to Robbo. But I think they were pleased with the outcome! One of the boys found a snippet of Barry Fry saying we'd get relegated. That got cut out and stuck on the changing room wall.
