Match Report

A dramatic last five minutes saw Pools extend their unbeaten home record with an unlikely victory against an unlucky Bournemouth side. The game started quietly with the visitors looking confident in possession, while Adam Boyd and Joel Porter looked dangerous for Pools. It was the home team who took the lead midway through the half when Chris WESTWOOD headed in from a corner. The goal seemed to lift Bournemouth, who dominated the rest of the half. They were level on 34 minutes when Derek HOLMES forced in a loose ball after an initial effort was blocked. Pools missed a great chance to restore their lead when Anthony Sweeney fired across the face of goal after Cherries keeper Neil Moss could only parry a John Brackstone shot. Then on the stroke of half-time Bournemouth took the lead themselves when Wade Elliott`s cross was headed in by Brian STOCK, with Micky Barron just failing to clear the ball before it crossed the line.

Pools battled away for an equaliser for most of the second half but Bournemouth defended well and restricted their hosts to shots from distance. With time running out and Bournemouth looking good value for the points, Westwood crossed the ball from the right and Micky NELSON headed in a dramatic equaliser. But that was just the start of the drama! As the game entered stoppage time, substitute Andy Appleby forced his way into the box and beat Moss with a low shot. However, referee Carl Boyeson adjudged that Appleby had been held, and disallowed the goal to award Pools a penalty! Having been denied what would surely have been the winning goal, the pressure was on as Adam Boyd stepped up to take the spot kick. To the frustration of the home supporters, Moss dived to his right to keep out Boyd`s penalty. But that was not the end of it! With seconds remaining, Pools were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. Gavin Strachan took it and his goalbound effort was diverted past Moss by the outstretched leg of APPLEBY, the teenage striker scoring the late, late winner that he looked to have been denied.

Bournemouth barely had time to restart before Boyeson blew his whistle to end the game at a jubilant Victoria Park. The referee had to be escorted from the pitch, with both sets of supporters angry with some of his decisions. It was certainly a lively end to the game!
