Match Report

Feelings of deja vu accompanied the final league game of the 2004/05 season. Twelve months earlier Pools had travelled to Swindon needing to gain at least a point from their playoff rivals to secure a top six finish. This was achieved thanks to Adam Boyd`s equaliser but the task looked more difficult this time around. Not only was the team`s form much shakier than a year earlier, but their opponents needed to win in order to take the last playoff place at Pools`s expense (Swindon had needed just a point themselves). In addition to this, manager Neale Cooper had sensationally left his post just days before the squad left for Dorset. Martin Scott was placed in temporary charge.

With so much at stake, it was Bournemouth that looked the better in side the opening exchanges, with the lively Wade Elliott causing problems for Ritchie Humphreys and Matty Robson down the right flank. It was Elliott who created the opening goal when his cross picked out James HAYTER who headed in unchallenged. The goal added a sense of urgency into the visitors` play and they were soon back on level terms. Robson`s cross from the left wing was met by Jon DALY who headed back across goal to equalise via the far post. It was a deserved first Pools goal for Daly, who had caused a lot of discomfort in the home defence in the opening 20 minutes.

A draw would be enough to send Pools into the playoofs so it was no surprise that the Cherries stepped up a gear. Again, most of the best work came from the flanks, and Micky Nelson was enjoying a great aerial battle with former Pools striker Steve Fletcher, with the defender winning more challenges than he lost. But Bournemouth were not to be denied. With most of the attention being paid to Fletcher and the centre backs, it was the smaller HAYTER who once again headed home unmarked, this time from a left wing corner.

Bournemouth started the second half strongly and within the opening 15 minutes, Martin Scott made two defensive changes to try to add some stability. Club captain Micky Barron replaced Ben Clark at right back and then Thomas Butler came on for Robson, with Humphreys dropping deeper to allow Butler to run at the Bournemouth defence. It was to prove a decisive move. Midway through the half Adam Boyd, who had been well marshalled by the Cherries defence, released Butler on the left of the area. The Dubliner got to the byeline and crossed to the far post where Antony SWEENEY headed the goal that would take Pools into the playoffs once again.

For the remainder of the game, Pools repelled Bournemouth`s attacks with relative ease, with the only real scare coming in hte last minute when the home team won a free kick on the edge of the area. Thankfully for the visitors, the setpiece flashed narrowly over and the 800 strong Pools support left the Fitness First stadium in happy mood, knowing that the team had done enough to earn a playoff semi-final against Tranmere Rovers.
