Match Report

Another away game brought another defeat, Pools`s eighth in a row in the league, but an improved performance saw Neale Cooper`s side unlucky to lose out to Walsall.

After surviving some initial pressure that saw Ben Clark clear a Standing effort off the line, Pools began to dominate the play. The front pairing of Adam Boyd and Joel Porter, well supported by Sweeney and Humphreys caused many problems for the home defence. Humphreys brought a fine save from Murphy in the Saddlers goal and Porter had an effort blocked at the end of a lovely move involving Boyd and Sweeney. It was no surprise when Pools took the lead just after the half-hour mark. Porter picked up the ball in midfield and sprinted towards the box. As the closing defender lost his footing, Porter slipped the ball to BOYD whose 20-yard shot beat Murphy with the help of a slight deflection. For the remainder of the half Pools kept the hosts at bay and went into the break with a deserved lead.

Walsall started the second half strongly with player-manager Paul Merson at the centre of most of their best moves. Merson had looked lethargic before the break but now he was playing much better and, at his prompting, Walsall were playing with more invention. On 51 minutes it was Merson who created the equaliser when he headed Mark Wright`s cross-shot back across goal for substitute Matty FRYATT to force the ball into the net. Then with 20 minutes remaining, Merson`s precise chipped pass picked out Jorge LEITAO who lobbed the ball over the advancing Konstantopoulos for the winner.

It was harsh on a Pools side that had promised so much in the first half, but it left them still with just three points out of a possible 30 on their travels. Away form would have to improve if the team wanted to repeat their play-off push of the previous season.
