Match Report

There was mixed team news as Pools travelled to Valley Parade looking to arrest an alarming run of four straight defeats. Chris Westwood and Mark Tinkler both made welcome returns to the side following injuries, but top scorer Adam Boyd only made the bench after an incident in the town a few days earlier had left him nursing cuts and bruises.

Pools started the game on the front foot and pinned City back in their own half for much of the opening half-hour. But, as it had been on the opening day of the season, the Bradford defence was strong and Pools struggled to get a clear sight of goal. The best chance of the opening exchanges came when Eifion Willimas, playing a rare game in his favoured strik, ing position, brought a fine save from Paul Henderson and Ritchie Humphreys put the rebound wide.

With time running out in the first half, Pools took the lead with a training ground free kick. In the absence of Boyd, Porter received a short kick to the edge of the area and spun his marker. The Australian tehn picked out his strike partner and WILLIAMS guided a header across Henderson from six yards. The home side were almost gifted an immediate equaliser. Jim Provett`s poor clearance went straight to Dean Windass and the veteran Bradford striker broke down the left before crossing for Andy Cooke, but Provett atoned for his error with a point-blank save.

The home side started the second half in more determined fashion and looked the better side in the opening 15 minutes. Their efforts were rewarded when Mark BOWER powered in a header from an Owen Morrison cross. The goal lifted the Bantams and Marc Bridge-Wilkinson almost gave them the lead but his shot was narrowly wide. Pools gradually got back into the game and for the rest of the game the sides were quite evenly matched. Pools regained the lead when a Matty Robson throw was flicked across his own area by Peter Atherton and PORTER rose at the far post to head home.

A frantic finish saw both sides denied what looked clear penalties, for a trip on Porter and a Nelson handball. But neither were given and despite a late scramble in the area, Pools held out for a much-needed win. It was a win that also dealt a severe blow to Bradford`s own fading playoff hopes.
