Match Report

Hartlepool United failed to win at home for the third successive game in the new league season. This time it was newly-promoted Scunthorpe United that frustrated the Victoria Park crowd, and it took a late Pools rally to deny the visitors a deserved victory. After his wonderful second half display at Huddersfield Adam Boyd was restored to the Pools starting lineup with Jon Daly making way. In-form Thomas Butler was forced to miss the game through injury. Chris Llewellyn took his place.

The game started in lively fashion with two goals in the opening eight minutes. First Michael PROCTOR finished sharply after good work from Boyd. Then Billy SHARP equalised for the Iron after Pools made a hash of clearing their lines. The remainder of the first half was evenly contested with few clear chances. Sharp came closest for the visitors while Antony Sweeny brought a good save out of Paul Musselwhite.

Scunthorpe took control of the game in the early stages of the second half. They were playing with the confidence of a side used to winning and passed the ball around with speed and accuracy, but when their second goal came it was from a defensive error. Neill Collins made a mess of a routine clearance and the chance was pounced on by SHARP for his second goal of the game. Fifteen minutes later it got worse as Sharp`s left wing cross was volleyed home by his strike partner Andy Keogh.

To their credit Pools didn`t give up the ghost, and substitute Eifion WILLIAMS handed his side a lifeline when he scored from the rebound after Musselwhite had saved from Proctor. Then, with time running out, fellow sub Daly was brought crashing to the ground as he chased a long ball from Ritchie Humphreys. Adam BOYD kept a cool head to slot home from 12 yards and earn Pools a point that had looked beyond them for much of the game.
