Match Report

Pools failed to build on the win at Bristol City as the first trip to Nottingham Forest in 50 years resulted in a comfortable victory for the hosts. Martin Scott kept faith in the side that had won at Ashton Gate, a decision which meant that Thomas Butler had to settle for a place on the bench on his return from suspension.

Forest started the better with young midfielder James Perch dictating a lot of their play. Perch, David Friio and former Pools star Nicky Southall all had good opportunities to open the scoring while Dimi Konstantopoulos did well to save from Gareth Taylor. Taylor`s strike partner Jack Lester had another good effort, but his curling shot flashed wide. Just after the half hour mark, Forest were rewarded for their efforts. Southall and Friio combined down the left and the latter`s teasing cross was guided home by TAYLOR. The halfway point of the game was reached with the home side deservedly ahead. Jon Daly had missed the best chance for Pools, but his shot flew well wide.

Early in the second half, Antony Sweeney had a great opportunity to equalise, but he shot straight at goalkeeper Russell Hoult from around 10 yards. It was the best chance Pools would create, and with more than half an hour still to play their task became harder when centre-half Micky Nelson was sent off for the first time in his career. Nelson had been marking the niggly Lester all game and he let his frustration get the better of him, knocking the striker to the floor in an off-the-ball incident. Lester`s reaction was disappointing but it made no difference: Nelson had to go.

The ten remaining players did create one good half-chance when Ritchie Humphreys`s low cross was narrowly missed by Eifion Williams. But the hosts finished on top and made the game safe in stoppage time. David Johnson`s run into the area was stopped illegally by Darren Williams, and substitute Eugen BOPP sent Konstantopoulos the wrong way from the spot to send the 1194 Pools supporters home disappointed.
