Match Report

Victoria Park welcomed back former manager Neale Cooper as he brought his struggling Gillingham side north. Two hours later, Cooper`s side had to begin the long journey home on the back of another defeat as a confident Pools side recorded their third successive victory to move into the top half of the table for the first time in the season. The game marked a milestone for Ritchie Humphreys as he played his 200th consecutive league game for the club, the first Hartlepool player ever to achieve this.

After a slightly lowkey opening, Pools took the lead after a quarter of an hour. Antony Sweeney`s miscued shot was pounced on by Jon DALY and the big striker lifted the ball over Gills keeper Tony Bullock. Pools looked confident and in control for the rest of the half, though Dimi Konstantopoulos had to be alert to save from Matthew Jarvis shortly before halftime.

Pools attacked from the start of the second half. Bullock tipped a Sweeney header onto the bar, but could do nothing a short while later when SWEENEY was on hand again to knock home a low cross from Eifion Williams and double the advantage. From that point on it was all Pools as the visitors struggled to clear their lines. Williams and Thomas Butler both went close, and Mickey Nelson hit the post with a fine header. Then, with six minutes remaining, Lee BULLOCK guided a header past his namesake from a Ritchie Humphreys corner.

Substitute Francis COLLIN hit a fine low drive from the edge of the area to provide small consolation to Neale Cooper, who had just acknowledged some generous appreciation from the Pools crowd. But the failure to keep a clean sheet in no way detracted from a fine performance from the home side. Perhaps the season had finally started.

They put us under the cosh a little bit at the start to be fair, but we got the goal we deserved. With a bit of luck we could have had five or six - I missed a good chance, Michael Nelson hit the post and we had a few other good chances as well
- Jon Daly
