Match Report

Hartlepool`s problems in front of goal continued as they enjoyed as much possession as their Huish Park hosts but failed to muster a worthwhile shot. There was good and bad news on the injury front for Martin Scott. Antony Sweeney missed the game through injury allowing Ben Clark to return to the side. In better news, Matty Robson was fit to start and he slotted in at left back, allowing Ritchie Humphreys to play in midfield.

The home side started stronger and Pools survived a scare in the tenth minute. The lively David Poole, who had already had a decent strike at goal, appeared to be fouled in the area by Darren William. But the referee didn`t give the penalty, to the relief of the Pools supporters who had made the long trip to Somerset. The Glovers had a great chance to open the scoring after 25 minutes, but Scott Guyett put a point blank header over the top. But the goal that the home side had been threatening arrived shortly afterwards. Kevin Amankwaah and Paul Terry combined on the right and Terry`s cross was met by an acrobatic effort from leading scorer Phil JEVONS. The goal was the last incident of note in a low key first half. The closest that Pools came to an equaliser was when Gavin Strachan hit afree kick into the Yeovil wall.

At half time Martin Scott made a similar change to the one at Oldham a week earlier, replacing Matty Robson with Jon Daly and reshuffling his side. It had a simialr effect in that Pools started the second half strongly, but for all their increased midfield possession they remained toothless in attack and all too often the moves broke down as they neared the Glovers goal. Michael Maidens and Michael Nelson had the only decent chances, but their efforts went wide. On the hour mark, Yeovil showed their visitors how to finish. Poole worked the ball over from the left and JEVONS shot home in confident fashion. Scott sent on loan striker James Walker and the Charlton man had a good effort blocked, but it was the hosts who came closest to scoring again. Matt Harrold`s shot hit the post before being scrambled clear by Micky Barron.

The last few games had seen Pools have at least as much possession as their opponents, but the stark facts showed just two points out of 18 with only four goals scored. Adam Boyd and Joel Porter had recently returned to training. On recent evidence their first team return couldn`t come soon enough.
