Match Report

Hartlepool United were handed a tricky fixture to open the new league season. MK Dons had been beaten playoff finalists three months earlier and had never lost a home game against Pools. Mick Wadsworth handed competitive debuts to Nobby Solano and Colin Nish, with two other new signings Nathan Luscombe and James Poole having to be a content with a place on the bench. Adam Boyd, who had impressed in pre-season, was rewarded with a place in the forward line alongside Nish.

The hosts started the game strongly with wingers Daniel Powell and Angelo Balanta causing problems, but it was Pools that struck first with a well-worked goal on 20 minutes. Andy Monkhouse combined excellently with Horwood to create a chance for the left back to float a ball to the far post where BOYD easily outjumped Dean Lewington to head Pools in front. The goal gave the visitors some confidence. MK remained on top but Pools were now looking dangerous on the break, with Antony Sweeney and Nish both coming close to increasing the advantage. At the other end the defence were earning their money with a number of blocks and headers to ensure that Flinders reached the break unbeaten.

The second half began with the home side once more pushing Pools back. The deserved equaliser arrived eight minutes in when Luke CHADWICK, at the heart of most of MK`s best moments, curled a lovely right foot shot past Flinders from just inside the box. The hosts sensed blood and Balanta came close to putting his side ahead when his piledriver skimmed the crossbar. Wadsworth responded by replacing Solano and Boyd with Luscombe and Paul Murray, reinforcing the midfield with an extra man and fresh legs. The move was a success, with MK continuing to dominate possession but finding it more difficult to create chances, especially after Chadwick left the field on 75 minutes.

With eight minutes remaining Wadsworth sent on Poole to have a run at tiring defenders, and the move brought immediate reward. Luscombe`s determination won the ball and POOLE sprinted clear from just inside the MK half, beating two home defenders before lifting the ball past Dave Martin into the top left corner. The ecstatic away supporters prepared to celebrate an unlikely victory when MK snatched a last gasp equaliser. Jay O`Shea cut in from the right wing and his left-footed shot took a couple of cruel deflections, including a decisive one from fellow sub Jabo IBEHRE.

There was late drama when home midfielder Stephen Gleeson went to ground inside the area after running past Luscombe, infuriating Pools players and fans alike. Thankfully the referee wasn`t fooled, but Paul Murray was booked for his reaction to the incident.

I was full of confidence from preseason - four goals there. It can sometimes be hard when stepping up to the first game of the season to reproduce your form from pre-season. Hopefully I've done that today.
- James Poole
We out-passed them, out-played them, out-numbered them at corners and their keeper made five excellent saves, but that's football. You have got to roll up your sleeves and get on with it.
- Karl Robinson
