Match Report

Pools bowed out of the Carling Cup in the first round as Danny Wilson`s Sheffield United gained some revenge for their defeat at the same stage a year earlier.

Both sides gave good value in an entertaining game with a number of chances at both ends. Adam Boyd created an opportunity for himself with a wonderful piece of skill only to be denied by a last-ditch challenge; Andy Monkhouse crashed a header against the inside of the upright, while Antony Sweeney and substitute Nathan Luscombe both missed great chances. Luscombe`s in particular looked easier to score, but he lifted his close range effort over the bar. At the other end, former Peterborough winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing was proving to be the danger man. He smashed one effort against the crossbar and had another well saved by Scott Flinders, with Neil Austin doing well to block the rebound from Richard Cresswell.

With both sides producing such eye-catchingly open football it was a surprise that the two hours of football produced just two goals. There was one in each half. The Blades took the lead on the half-hour when Mendez-Laing`s left wing cross was headed home from eight yards by Stephen QUINN. The equaliser arrived ten minutes from time at the end of a spell of pressure from Pools. Luscombe clipped a wonderful ball over the top of the defence for SWEENEY to guide home a volley from around 15 yards. That proved to be Sweeney`s last meaningful contribution, with a groin injury forcing him off the pitch six minutes later. With all three substitutes already used, Pools were forced to play the thirty minutes of extra time a man short.

In the end it all came down to penalties. The first six were all scored before Colin Nish, who had worked tirelessly all night, sent Pools` fourth effort over the bar. Flinders spared his new teammate`s blushes with a fine save from Quinn, but when Sam Collins had his effort saved by Steve Simonsen there was to be no second reprieve. Substitute Danny Philliskirk stepped up to send his side into the second round.

Notes

  • Pools played extra time with ten men having lost Antony Sweeney to injury on 86 minutes.
  • Scott Flinders was booked during the penalty shootout.
It’s a shame to lose, the game hinged on an injury to Sweeney which changed the complexion of the game. We were in the ascendency at the time.
- Mick Wadsworth
When the game was getting into the last stages, I thought we should have put it to bed. The nice thing is that we've got a little momentum going.
- Danny Wilson
