Wilson`s first season in charge began slowly, with the team winning just two of the first nine games of their League Two campaign. Three high-scoring wins in a week briefly raised hopes of a revival but that was immediately followed by a five game winless run, and Wilson took his side to Accrington Stanley in November with discontent beginning to make itself heard on the terraces. The Accrington game proved to be a turning point. After trailing at half-time Pools won thanks to stunning second-half strikes from Eifion Williams and Ritchie Humphreys. It was the start of a remarkable sequence of results that saw Pools break a whole host of club records during a 23 game unbeaten run that contained 19 wins. By the time Wilson`s men lost again (at Barnet in April) they were top of the league. Promotion was secured at Wycombe with three games remaining and, though Walsall won a tight title race, Wilson`s first season could not be looked at as anything other than a resounding success.
League One proved to be a tougher proposition. With the momentum of the promotion charge behind them Pools made an excellent start but this early promise faded through the winter months mainly through some wretched away form. The season even showed signs of becoming a relegation scrap until three successive wins in March eased those fears and Pools eventually finished a reasonably comfortable 15th.
The 2008/09 season began in similar fashion to its predecessor. Pools were in fine form at home, scoring lots of goals and winning some thrilling matches. The highlight of this period was an extra-time victory over top flight West Brom in the Carling Cup. Away form was still a worry as was the defence, and both of these caused an increasing amount of frustration among the supporters. Attendances at the Vic dropped to below 3500 and, after a six game winless run, it was announced on 15th December 2008 that the club had parted company with Danny Wilson.
