Match Report

Hartlepool finally recorded their first home league win of the season with a battling comeback against MK Dons. But for the third game in succession Pools finished with ten men as Mark Tinkler became the latest player to earn himself a three game ban.

Martin Scott paired Eifion Williams and Jon Daly up front in an attacking lineup, and Pools started brightly. Pablo Mills cleared off the Dons goal line to prevent Williams scoring after just five minutes, and the defender had to be sharp shortly afterwards to prevent a Chris Llewellyn cross from reaching his fellow Welshman. The home side`s good work was undone midway through the half. Stephen Quinn played a neat throughball to Izale MCLEOD and the pacy striker beat Dimi Konstantopoulos from inside the area. The goal inspired the Dons to their best spell of the half, and McLeod was only denied a second by an offside flag that looked a little generous. The halfway point was reached with the home crowd braced for more disappointment.

Pools were handed a lifeline on 50 minutes when Dean LEWINGTON could only turn Thomas Butler`s wicked cross into his own net. The home side were lifted by this good fortune and were on top for most of the remainder of the game with Butler and Llewellyn causing most problem. With just six minutes remaining Pools won the game. Substitute Lee BULLOCK had been on the pitch less than ten minutes when he met Darren Craddock`s cross with a sweet header that gave Matt Baker no chance.

The game ended in bizarre fashion. Aaron Wilbraham came on as Dons prepared to take an attacking throw. The striker immediately tangled with Tinkler and, after a bit of shoving, the referee elected to dismiss both players. Wilbraham had only been on the pitch for 20 seconds! Tinkler`s red card was disappointing but the incident failed to take the shine off a valuable win.
