Match Report

A bumper crowd of 5170 turned up for the first home game of the season but Pools were forced to settle for a point after an often scrappy encounter.

The game got off to a painful start when Gary Liddle challenged Saddlers skipper Andy Butler in the air immediately from kickoff. The resulting collision led to Liddle needing to leave the field for a short while, and it was during those couple of minutes that Walsall controversially took the field.

Paul Murray, in the side in place of the injured Antony Sweeney, attempted to clear a bouncing ball on the edge of the box only for striker Will Grigg to challenge from his blind side and collide with the midfielder`s raised boot. To the surprise of supporters and players alike, the referee Mr Tierney awarded a penalty which was gratefully converted by veteran striker Jon MACKEN.

A patched-up Liddle returned to the fray - he would play the full match before being diagnosed with a fractured cheekbone - and Pools were soon celebrating a bizarre equaliser. Goalkeeper Scott Flinders had scored a memorable goal in the previous league game at the Vic and he almost repeated the feat. Flinders` long clearance was hopelessly misjudged by opposite number Jimmy Walker who let it bounce over his head. As he frantically clawed at the ball to prevent it crossing the line Colin NISH made absolutely sure from six inches.

Few chances were created in the rest of the opening half, but the main talking point occurred five minutes from the break. Nobby Solano had been substituted after 20 minutes with a hamstring problem and his replacement Nathan Luscombe joined him back in the dressing room just 20 minutes later. Luscombe challenged for a 50/50 ball in midfield with Butler, a strong tackle that left Luscombe on the ground in pain. Referee Tierney decided that the challenge was enough to warrant a red card... for BOTH players!

With both teams down to ten men the second half was frustratingly patchy. Nish was involved in most of Pools` best moments but the visitors managed more attempts at goal, though Flinders was not unduly troubled. Pools came closest to a winner when the excellent Liddle charged down a clearance to send substitute James Poole clear on goal. Unfortunately the youngster could not repeat his opening day heroics and his shot was saved by Walker.

Notes

  • The red card for Walsall's Andy Butler was rescinded on appeal. Pools decided not to appeal Nathan Luscombe's dismissal and the midfielder served a three match ban.
We were getting on top and Nathan Luscombe was playing well before the red - I've seen it back and I don't really think it's a yellow even for either player. I have to be careful what I say but I thought it was a poor decision, and one that affected the game dramatically.
- Mick Wadsworth
I had the benefit of looking at it and I don’t think it’s a sending off. Andy’s won the ball with one foot and the other one has gone through as the other lad’s come in. You want to keep 11 against 11 and make it a proper game.
- Dean Smith
