Match Report

Pools were brought crashing back to earth as Bury completed a double over Colin Cooper's men. With the excellent victory at Morecambe fresh in the mind, Pools looked in the mood to get off to a flyer, and Brad Walker had a shot cleared off the line in only the second minute as the home side began strongly. But the lively start was rendered irrelevant when the Shakers struck a double blow. First, Scott Flinders made a mess of a Danny Mayor shot to hand the visitors a lead on their first attack; then, as Pools tried to respond quickly, they were hit by a quick counter attack and Danny Nardiello finished in clinical style. Just twelve minutes gone and Pools already had a mountain to climb. They continued to play on the front foot for much of the rest of the game, with James Poole coming closest to grabbing a lifeline. But the Shakers would not be denied, and Richard Hinds took advantage of a rare second half attack to score the third from close range. Substitutes Antony Sweeney and Nialle Rodney both missed great chances to reduce the arrears, but it was one of those days.

I thought the keeper Brian Jensen and the defenders defended very well. Every time we got threatening in and around the box they put their bodies on the line with blocks or saves at good times – as disappointed as I am, I’d have to admit we could probably have been here until next week and not scored.
- Colin Cooper
Three goals away from home is good but a clean sheet, with the treacherous conditions, I'm delighted with the boys. To a man, they were outstanding.
