Match Report

Pools kicked their season into gear with a hard-fought victory against Doncaster at a soggy Belle Vue. The game saw a debut handed to young centre-half Neill Collins, newly arrived on a half-season loan from Premiership neighbours Sunderland. Martin Scott persisted with a strikeforce of Jon Daly and Michael Proctor, meaning that Adam Boyd had to be content with a place on the bench for the second successive game.

Pools started the game brightly with Thomas Butler looking particularly lively. Daly came close to giving his side an early advantage but his low shot was kept out by Rovers keeper Andy Warrington. The home side weathered the early Pools pressure and gradually began to create some chances of their own. Neil Roberts and Steve Foster both had good chances to score but were denied by a lack of composure and a fine save respectively. Pools were still looking dangerous and Warrington had to be at his best to keep out a wicked curler from Proctor ten minutes from the break. But the keeper was beaten on the stroke of half-time as Pools took a crucial lead. Butler ran at the home defence and hit a low shot from 20 yards. Warrington made another good save but the loose ball was pounced on by DALY who scored from six yards in front of the soaked travelling supporters.

Doncaster came out in the second half determined to turn the game around and Pools found themselves on the back foot for the majority of the half. Collins put in a fantastic debut performance, winning most of his challenges in the air and on the floor. Micahel Nelson was his usual impressive self and, along with Collins, restricted the home side to few clear sights at goals. When they were beaten, Rovers found Dimi Konstantopoulos in imperious form. He saved well at James Coppinger`s feet and produced a fingertip effort to deny Paul Heffernan. But his best moment came when a point blank Phil McGuire header from a corner seemed to be past him. The Greek keeper somehow reached backwards and clawed the ball off the goal-line one-handed.

Pools still had their moments on the break, with Lee Bullock coming closest when his header hit the bar. But this was a defensive performance first and foremost, and the delighted away fans could largely thank Konstantopoulos and his defenders for the first league win at Belle Vue in over 20 years.
