Match Report

Ross McCormack`s stunning strike denied Pools a hard-fought victory in an entertaining game played in a fierce wind. Lee Bullock kept his place from the game at Tranmere 11 days earlier so the fit-again Antony Sweeney had to be content with a place among the substitutes. Eifion Williams returned to the side after missing two games following the birth of his second child while Darrell Clarke made a rare start in place of Matty Robson.

With a strong gale at their backs, Pools had much the better of the first half with Rovers struggling to get the ball forward. After a good spell of possession Pools took the lead on 20 minutes. Adam BOYD took a cross from Eifion Williams on his chest and drove in a shot past Jan Budtz from just inside the area. It was Boyd`s first goal since returning to the side following his knee injury. Rovers had an immediate chance to equalise, but Ritchie Humphreys cleared McCormack`s shot off the line with Konstantopoulos beaten. Then two minutes later Eifion Williams should really have doubled the lead. Having done well to beat his man and cut into the area, the striker dragged his shot badly and the chance was missed. Williams had another half chance when he just beat Budtz to a ball over the top but as the ball flew into the air Williams appeared to lose it and Budtz recovered to clear. The half ended with Pools on the attack once more and Boyd`s drive just over the bar was the last chance the home side had to take a two-goal cushion into the break.

The second half started with Rovers seemingly having been told to adopt a shoot-on-sight policy. With the fierce wind now at their backs it was their turn to have the lion`s share of the territory and possession. Michael Nelson and Ben Clark were both called into action many times to clear their lines, and the two centre backs coped magnificently as Rovers continued to press forward. Leo Fortune-West came agonisingly close to an equaliser, and Ritchie Humphreys cleared off the line once more. With time running out Doncaster`s attacks became more frantic but less controlled and with Nelson and Clark in dominant form Pools looked like holding on. Chris Llewellyn had a chance to finish the game when played in by Boyd but he hesitated too long and failed to get a shot away. As the game entered stoppage time Rovers got the equaliser that their second half pressure had threatened. McCORMACK picked up the ball fully 30 yards out and hit an unstoppable shot into the top right hand corner.

In a game that was dominated by the wind a draw was a fair result, and both sides emerged with a lot of credit for producing an entertaining afternoon`s football despite the conditions.

It feels like two points dropped because of how late the equaliser came but we have to keep our heads up. But for a wonder goal we would have beaten one of the best footballing sides in the division.
