Match Report

Hartlepool suffered their first defeat under Paul Stephenson with an ultimately disappointing display at Glanford Park. An unchanged Pools team started the game very strongly and the home side struggled to get a foothold in the game. Michael Maidens, clearly given confidence from his wonder strike a few nights earlier, hit a good effort in the first couple of minutes and also had a great run down the right wing that was only ended with a strong challenge on the goal line. As Pools continued to dominate possession, Adam Boyd and Lee Bullock both had good shots saved by keeper Paul Musselwhite, who was also happy to see a Stephen Turnbull piledriver just shave his far post. Almost inevitably after so much pressure from the visitors, it was the home side that took the lead from the first notable attack they had managed. Cleveland Taylor`s cross from the right was headed in by Ian BARACLOUGH. The goal came as a blow to Pools after all of their good work and Scunthorpe managed to hold their lead until the break. Boyd came closest to an equaliser but his shot from 15 yards crashed back off the crossbar.

The home side were forced into a change early in the second half when injured centre-half Andy Crosby was replaced by veteran winger Peter Beagrie, with Richard Hinds switching to centre back. The new formation worked well for the Iron and they were much stronger in the second half than they had been in the opening period. Taylor missed a glorious chance to double the lead as Pools struggled to match their earlier efforts despite the introduction of substitute Joel Porter. With around 20 minutes remaining Scunthorpe made the game safe when Taylor crossed for Matt SPARROW to finish in the corner. The second goal ended the game as a contest. Bullock and Boyd did go close to scoring as Pools tried hard to get back into the game. But by over-committing on the attack, Pools were leaving gaps at the back and only a fine save from Dimi Konstantopoulos prevented Baraclough from giving the score a more flattering look.

This was undoubtedly a setback for Pools against a side they could have been looking to catch. Paul Stephenson will have taken some positives from the first half display, but this had to go down as an opportunity missed.

We didn't get the breaks but there were a lot of positives from the game for us. We played ever so well and looked more likely to score in the first half.
