Match Report

Hartlepool failed to build on a strong start as they were held to a point by promotion chasing Barnsley at Victoria Park. Joel Porter was named in the starting eleven in place of Eifion Williams. It was Porter`s first start since his return from long-term injury and it didn`t take him long to justify his selection. With just nine minutes on the clock, Micky Nelson headed down from a corner and PORTER clipped the ball into the roof of the net. With confidence high, Pools pressed the visitors back for much of the opening half-hour. Nelson hit a shot off the crossbar and Tykes keeper Nick Colgan produced a fine save to prevent Chris Llewellyn from increasing the lead. But in a repeat of the defeat at Scunthorpe, and to the frustration of the home supporters, Barnsley scored from the first good chance they had created. Paul Heckingbottom`s cross was met by the head of the diving Anthony KAY. Lifted by their equaliser, the Tykes almost grabbed the lead before halftime, but Dimi Konstantopoulos managed to turn Chris Shuker`s cross shot over the bar.

The second half saw few chances created in the early stages. Adam Boyd shot wide from close range while Llewellyn`s shot from an acute angle was kept out by Colgan. Barnsley`s best effort came from Brian Howard but the midfielder`s volley was brilliantly tipped over by Konstantopoulos. With time running out both sides had great chances to steal all three points. Nelson`s excellent challenge stopped Paul Hayes from getting a clean strike at goal, then Darren Williams crossed from the right where his namesake Eifion just failed to wrap his foot around the ball enough to divert it goalwards.

With both sides wanting the points for different reasons, a draw was a fairly unsatisfactory result all round. But both sides had chances to win the game and both managers would admit that it could have been worse. It was a point gained.

I thought we limited then to very few chances, and we had the better clear-cut opportunities. The performance shows me that the players are well up for the fight. Once again a top six side has come, and we've been the better side
