Match Report

Pools survived an almighty scare against bottom side Port Vale to register their third home win in a row. With Sam Collins banned following an unsuccessful appeal against his red card at Southend, Godwin Antwi was moved from right back to centre half, with Antony Sweeney switching to right back and David Foley coming into the side on the right of midfield.

The game began in woeful fashion. With just three minutes gone Alan Thompson lost possession in the centre circle and Vale broke clear, with Chris HERD scoring from just inside the box. Herd had signed on loan from Aston Villa in January and the goal was his first in league football. By the 15 minute mark he had another. Another Vale break saw the lively Tobias Mikaelsson release HERD who fired past Jan Budtz from 20 yards. AT the other end Pools were finding visiting keeper Joe Anyon in fine form, making good saves to deny Thompson, Sweeney and Joel Porter. The teams left the field at half time to a chorus of boos from three sides of the ground, with only the 65 Vale fans in the Rink End feeling happy with their lot.

With Matty Robson on in place of Ritchie Humphreys, Pools stepped up the pace after the break and came close to scoring when Micky Nelson`s shot was cleared off the line, while Anyon pulled off another good save to deny Richard Barker. With an hour gone Pools were handed a boost when Vale were reduced to ten men, with Krystian Pearce receiving a second yellow card for handling while trying to prevent Porter breaking towards goal. With a man advantage Pools poured forwards and got back into the game with 20 minutes remaining, when Thompson`s high cross was headed in by BARKER. The rest of the game was spent mostly in and around the Vale box, with the excellent Anyon saving from Nelson, Foley and Michael Mackay. But the keeper was beaten with just three minutes left when Barker controlled Thompson`s cross and SWEENEY blasted home from close range. Straight from the kickoff Vale nearly won it when Luke Rodgers shot just wide of Budtz`s goal, and the miss proved costly deep in stoppage time when BARKER rose to head home Thompson`s corner.
